This is my review of the Amazon Kindle 2 which has changed the way I view books and the activity of reading. Much like my iPod or my BlackBerry, the Amazon Kindle 2 has changed the way I read and made my reading more productive.
Much like my iPod, the Kindle 2 also makes reading faster and more efficient because all my new books are always with me. If I tire of one or need to reference another I just switch books in seconds, no more carying my books around the house etc.
The Kindle software is also available for the PC / Mac and various cell phone and ipod and ipad platforms. This means if your Kindle is not with you your books still are. Fire up the Kindle software and it senses where you left off on your Kindle 2 and you just keep reading. When you are back with your Kindle 2 it determines where you left off on your PC etc and starts the book just where you left off. So when you get a Kindle 2 you are really gettting on a versitile reading platform sort of like cloud computing for readers.
Ok from a reading and product prospective the Amazon Kindle 2 is excellent in the following ways. The Amazon store available wirelessly for free on the Kindle performs well and makes shopping a genuine activity. An excellent thing about the Kindle is the amount of free and low cost books available. This is why I say shopping becomes an activity because hunting for free or low cost books contains a thrill of its own. Many authors who create a series of books will give away the first in the series which is intended to suck you in. I’ve found many for free or $1.99 and the others in the series are also low cost like $3.99 a book.
The Next Page button on both sides of the Kindle 2 makes reading easy regardless of how you hold the unit. I only wish that they would put additional Next page buttons on the top right and left as well. If you want the previous page however you are limited to the left side for a button but that has not been a problem as I rarely page back.
The Keyboard is easy to use and joystick button for moving around the screen very intuitive.
Ok from a productivity standpoint here’s where the Kindle 2 has changed my reading alltogether. Unlike a paperback I can tuck my Kindle anywhere and bring it anywhere. So any moment i’m held up like a line or waiting room or standing around I can be reading. Much like my cell phone I can also be doing something and glance at the email or in the case of the Kindle the book and still be doing what I was doing such as waiting in line, or picking stuff up at the store. Unlike a book which looks strange for someone to open up and read the Kindle is always open so you just glance down, read a page or so and move on with what you were doing. This small increments of reading really ads up and I can fly through books much faster because I don’t have to remember to carry them with me.
